As a teen in Ormond Beach, FL, she racked up a shiny collection of National Scholastic Surfing Association trophies in under a year, and then made good on those successes by winning the National Championship a year later. Itching to pursue a pro career but discouraged by her surf-disapproving parents, the rebellious sixteen-year-old ran away to California, leaving a note vowing that she would win a world title.
